Today we're digging into MLA format. You have three options. Pick the one that will help you fill in the gaps in your knowledge. If you have extra time, you may do additional options for more credit.

=========================

Option One, What to quote, what to quote:

Go HERE then click on "You Quote It, You Note it."

Do the entire activity (the parts that aren't blocked). Open Microsoft Word and write a one-page-maximum description (in MLA format) of what you've learned. Quote as necessary. Save and email me (as an attachment) your response to the address over there in the sidebar-------------->

=========================

Option Two, Cite this:

Look at UI's library website's MLA citation examples. Take all their examples and arrange them properly in a Microsoft Word document. (Should look something like THIS.)

Save your works-cited page and email it to me using the address over there in the sidebar-------------->

(Don't forget your real name, monkeybot77@yahoo.com.)

=========================

Option Three, Welcome to Purdue:

Purdue's Online Writing Lab (OWL) is one of the best resources online for learning MLA. Go to the front page of their MLA stuff. Explore.

This is the most loosey-goosey of the three options which means it has the most potential to be helpful but is also the hardest to get full credit for.

Essentially what I want you to do is this:

Make a Microsoft Word document in MLA format in which you describe the sorts of information OWL offers and practice using it. I don't have a specific endproduct in mind for this option which means you'll need to be thoughtful and creative in deciding what to write about and how to write about it.

When you're done, save your document and email to the address in the sidebar-------------->

=========================

ATTENTION ALL:

Next Tuesday we will be in this computer lab again. It will be the ONLY OTHER DAY we will be in the lab before all your Animal Farm stuff is due. Plan to use that time wisely.

=========================

Note: while working on your works-cited page, you might find EasyBib helpful.

Today we're covering the bases of Western Literature and Civilization. No problem.

.

We'll be officially in the D computer lab the rest of this week. Should you need passes to the library (etc) you are welcome to them.

1. Visit this list, claim your stories (see instructions on that page), get researching. Be careful though --- don't assume you know more than you know (cf this).

2. On Monday May 16 you will give a presentation on both stories. Your presentation will include a brief retelling of both stories and at least one example of one of your stories being used in modern literature (1550 or later). (You might find it more useful to begin with a modern tale and deconstruct it to its classical or biblical ancestors. Here's a link that gives you a sense of what's out there.)

3. Part of the reason Greek myth and the Old Testament have been so formative for Western culture is because they're dang good stories. If you not having fun with this assignment, you're doing it wrong.

4. I'm sitting right over there. Feel free to ask me questions.

April 5, 2011

.

If you did not finish yesterday's work, do that first.

For today, go to http://themedassignment.blogspot.com/ and download the instructions to your assignment (Now Available!). Go through them as a group, then begin discussion on which bundle you want to do. YOU WILL ONLY HAVE THESE TWO DAYS TO DISCUSS THIS IN CLASS. Use your time wisely.

Begin work on the sheets due next week. Remember that a bundle can only be done once per quarter, so if you are worried about another group taking your bundle, get the sheets done and turned in early. You may begin giving them to me on Thursday.

Lastly, remember:
    paranoid

    surreal

    brutish

    vulnerable

    temporary

    algorithm

    nostalgia

    epilepsy

    Plus six more from the good old days.

Friday.

What we're doing on April 4, 2011

.

1. Go to http://themedassignment.blogspot.com/. Remember this address as we'll be here a lot in the coming months.

2. Open April 4 Preparatory Worksheet. You will need to save this and email it to me (see my address in the sidebar) so make sure you know how do to this. It's important.

3. Do what the worksheet instructs. When you finish, email it to me. You may want to email yourself a copy too, to be safe.

ps: remember that the senior instructions currently listed in are not accurate so ignore them

On the ole epilogue....

.

[NOTE: This post consists of more than one part. Read the whole thing before proceeding.]

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Seniors.

We have now finished reading The Autobiography of Malcolm X and, having read the epilogue, we have a sense of how Alex Haley was involved in creating and finishing the manuscript.

A new biography of Malcolm X is in the works and its author recently talked about the autobiography and the difficulty of doing original research on Malcolm. Here is the interview. Did you know the FBI had 40,000 pages on Malcolm? Was the FBI afraid he was a "black messiah"? Was Alex Haley in cahoots with the FBI? Whether he was or wasn't, can we trust the book we just read?

And those are just questions about the FBI.

The interview is rather long, but go check it out. Skim through it, but try to read, say, half, at least.

Once you feel you have a good sense of the interview, answer these questions and email them to me (my email address is in the sidebar). Write coherently and with proper paragraphs and sentences.

I look forward to your thoughtful responses.

1. What is in the Autobiography's three missing chapters? Why do you think they were not included in the final, printed book?

2. What makes Malcolm X's death even more suspicious to Professor Marable? Who do you think is most to blame for his death?

3. Based on the epilogue and this interview, do you think Malcolm X was correct or mistaken in coming to trust Alex Haley? Explain why you think that way.

4. How did this interview change your thinking about Malcolm or the Autobiography? Why or why not?

5. Who do you trust more, Alex Haley or Manning Marable? Why? How do we decide who to trust?

HOW TO GET FILES OFF YOUR DIGITAL RECORDER

0. DON'T DELETE ANYTHING UNTIL YOU ARE 101% SURE YOU HAVE A SEPARATE COPY OF YOUR FILES.

1. Plug it in. You'll need the little USB cord from the box.

2. Be patient. It may take a while for anything to happen, especially if the computer has to download anything to read the recorder.

3. If the computer does not automatically pop up a folder, it will probably ask if you want to. Say yes. If it doesn't even do that, click on the Start Button, click on Computer, and the device should be one of your options.

4. The recorder will offer you folders A, B, C, D and E. They'll be in whichever one you recorded in. If you don't know, check them all till you find your files.

5. You'll need to listen to the files probably to see which is what. And once you know which ones belong to whom, you'll need to upload them to email or same them to a flash drive or your student space or wherever. SOMEWHERE YOU CAN FIND THEM AGAIN.

6. If you have problems, ask me or a successful neighbor.

----------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------

If you finish all that and haven't done this week's vocabulary yet, here are the words (tomorrow! Random Number Generator!):

malignant
duplicity
subconsciously
wanton
adjacent
epilogue
dilemma
congruent

In related news, here's a cool website I just ran across: Wordnik

Don't forget that next week I'll be grading your vocabulary notes for the entire quarter. Make sure you have it all put together for me.

----------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------

And speaking of things that are falling due, I'm collected Malcom X notes Thursday, as well as the quiz I emailed you yesterday (check your email).

----------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------

Basically, you have lots to do. Use your time well.
